New Angiotensin II Blocker Counters Hypertension Effectively And Safely

Olmesartan medoxomil, a new angiotensin II receptor blocker, appears to be a safe and effective once daily treatment for hypertension.

 Its safety profile is similar to placebo, report specialists at Orange County Heart Institute and Research Center, Orange, California, United States. They carried out a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to assess the efficacy and safety of olmesartan medoxomil in patients with moderate to severe essential hypertension.

 The specialists randomised 334 patients to receive either placebo or olmesartan medoxomil 5, 20 or 80 mg. once daily or olmesartan medoxomil 2.5, 10 or 40 mg. twice daily. Ambulatory and cuff blood pressure were measured before and after eight weeks of treatment.
