CABG May Be Better Than Stent for Coronary Artery Disease

Laurie Barclay, MD Sept. 27, 2002 — Compared with stents, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) reduced the rate of revascularization procedures in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), according to results of the multicenter Stent or Surgery (SoS) trial reported in the Sept. 28 issue of The Lancet. Although a secondary outcome assessment also suggested lower frequency of death with CABG than with stents, this study took place before the use of drug-eluting stents.

Earlier this week at the 14th annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) symposium, investigators from the SIRIUS trial reported favorable final results for the sirolimus-eluting stent.
