The optimum upper heart rate limit for pacemaker patients during exercise is 14% to 25% lower than normal age-predicted values, according to new study findings published in the August issue of the European Heart Journal.
Programming the maximal pacing rate too low can impair exercise capacity, while programming it too high could be harmful, Dr. K. Dickstein, from the University of Bergen in Stavanger, Norway, notes in an accompanying editorial. Therefore, it is important to determine what rates are optimal for pacemaker patients.
