NIH to Study Chelation Therapy For Coronary Artery Disease

In what they hope will be the definitive study, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), both parts of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have launched a large randomized trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of chelation therapy for treating coronary artery disease.

“The public health imperative to undertake a definitive study of chelation therapy is clear,” Dr. Stephen E. Straus, director of the NCCAM, says in a news release. “The widespread use of chelation therapy in lieu of established therapies, the lack of adequate prior research to verify its safety and effectiveness, and overall impact of coronary artery disease convinced NIH that the time is right to launch this rigorous study,” he adds.
