Autologous Bone Marrow Injection Improves Limb Ischemia

Injecting autologous bone marrow into the gastrocnemius of patients with ischemic limbs can significantly improve blood flow, tissue oxygenation, and symptoms, according to results of a pilot trial published in the Aug. 10 issue of The Lancet. “

Implantation of bone marrow-mononuclear cells could be a safe and effective strategy for achievement of therapeutic angiogenesis, because of the natural ability of marrow cells to supply endothelial progenitor cells and to secrete various angiogenic factors,” lead author Eriko Tateishi-Yuyama, MD, from Kansai Medical University in Osaka, Japan, says in a news release.

 In an initial pilot study, 25 patients with unilateral leg ischemia received an injection of bone marrow-mononuclear cells into the gastrocnemius of the ischemic limb and of saline into the other leg. In the second phase of this study, 22 patients with bilateral leg ischemia were randomly injected with bone marrow mononuclear cells in one leg and with peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the other leg.
