Statins Interfere With Angiogenesis

– By inhibiting lipidation of the RhoA protein in endothelial cells, statins interfere with the formation of new blood vessels, investigators report.

Based on this finding, the use of statins may be extended beyond the treatment of hypercholesterolemia to include cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetic retinopathy and psoriasis, Dr. Jonas B. Galper, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and associates suggest in the July 26th issue of Circulation Research.

The investigators first demonstrated that fibroblast growth factor-2 stimulated capillary growth in the cornea of mouse eyes, but the addition of simvastatin at a concentration of 5 mol/L abolished the angiogenic response in 26 of 29 corneas.
