Doppler-derived myocardial performance index correlates inversely with left ventricular function, reflects disease severity and is useful in assessing cardiopulmonary exercise capacity in patients with congestive heart failure. These results are reported by investigators from the Cardiology Department at Heraklion University Hospital in Heraklion, Crete, Greece.
The researchers evaluated Doppler-derived myocardial performance index–a measure of combined systolic and diastolic myocardial performance–in 42 patients with idiopathic or ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy both before and after administration of low-dose dobutamine.
Patients had heart failure of class II to IV according to New York Heart Association classifications. Patients underwent a baseline echocardiography study followed by administration of low-dose intravenous dobutamine. A cardiopulmonary exercise test was also conducted for all patients.
