Beta-Blockers Seen As Preferred Approach to Preventing AF After Heart Surgery

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 10 –

In reducing the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) after cardiac surgery, beta-blockers have advantages over other comparably effective pharmacologic interventions, Canadian researchers report in a rapid access release of a paper from the July 2nd issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

 In an interview with Reuters Health, Dr. Stuart J. Connolly from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario noted that “AF is the most common complication of heart surgery, and although it is usually of short duration it has potential impacts on care, including the amount of time patients spend in the hospital.”
