Sirolimus Stent Highly Promising

A coronary stent coated with sirolimus (rapamycin) compared to the standard uncoated stent has produced striking results in patients undergoing stenting for a single coronary lesion.

After six-months of follow-up, rate of restenosis was 26.6 percent in the standard stent versus 0 percent in the sirolimus stent group in this multinational trial. More study will be needed to determine both how durable these results are and whether the sirolimus-eluting stent is as effective in patients with more complex coronary lesions.

For now, however, the results of this randomised double blind trial for the RAVEL Study Group, chaired by Marie-Claude Morice from the Institut Cardiovasculaire Paris Sud, Massy, France, are seen as highly promising.

Increasing use of stents has improved results of percutaneous coronary revascularization. However, in-stent restenosis continues to limit the long-term success of this approach.
