Heart Failure Outcome Predicted By Circulatory Power

Circulatory power – a surrogate of cardiac power at peak exercise – is a powerful prognostic factor in chronic heart failure.

Dr A Cohen-Solal and colleagues report a study of 175 patients with chronic heart failure who underwent a cardiopulmonary exercise test.

 Before the experiment, it was known that peak exercise cardiac power and stroke work are invasive parameters with a proven prognostic value.

 However, the scientific literature is less clear on whether these variables have a better prognostic value than peak oxygen uptake (VO2 max).

The study was designed to assess the prognostic value of circulatory power.

Circulatory power and circulatory stroke work are defined as the product of systolic arterial pressure and VO2 and oxygen pulse, respectively.
