LONDON (Reuters Health) May 30 –
Screening relatives of patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia is a cost-effective way to reduce death from coronary heart disease, researchers report in the June 1st issue of the British Medical Journal.
“Many people only discover they have familial hyperlipidaemia when they get their first heart attack,” coauthor Dr. Margaret Thorogood told Reuters Health. “The risk is very high, with half the men who do not get treatment having a heart attack before they are 50,” she said.
