Perindopril Controls High Blood Pressure in Diabetics

Special to DG News NEW YORK, NY — May 19, 2002 —

Perindopril erbumine appears to be effective as an antihypertensive agent and well tolerated in patients maintained on oral hypoglycemic agents.

The findings were reported here Friday at the 17th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension (ASH). Dr. Jay Cohn, with the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and co-workers evaluated the efficacy and safety of the long-acting angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor in 899 patients who were maintained on concomitant oral hypoglycemic agents.

Subjects were drawn from a 12-week, open-label community trial. They had either newly diagnosed hypertension, were unable to tolerate other antihypertensive medications, or had been treated unsuccessfully with other single antihypertensive medications. For the study, patients were treated with perindopril 4 mg/day for six weeks, which was increased to 8 mg/day for an additional six weeks depending on their blood pressure response. Supine blood pressures were measured at baseline, week six, and week 12.

Target blood pressure level was defined as systolic blood pressure (DBP)/diastolic blood pressure (DBP)<140/90 mm Hg, SBP<140 mm Hg or DBP<90 mm Hg, SBP<140 mm Hg, and DBP<90 mm Hg.
