First artificial heart patient dies

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Reuters) – The recipient of the world's first totally implantable artificial heart died on Friday after suffering bleeding problems, his doctors said.

Robert Tools, who received the artificial heart on July 2 at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, developed abdominal bleeding because of continuing anti-coagulation problems related to his severe and chronic medical condition, they said.

The hospital said he died hours after it was announced that he had suffered multiple organ failure.

The grapefruit-sized plastic and titanium replacement heart, called AbioCor, is manufactured by Danvers, Massachusetts-based Abiomed Inc.
