Important predictors of outcome following hospital admission for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary have been identified in a British study.

Investigators from multiple institutions including the Royal College of Physicians in London and the Aintree Chest Centre in Liverpool, England, examined data from the British Thoracic Society and Royal College of Physicians national audit of acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Fourteen hundred admissions for acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from 38 hospitals were included in the evaluation. Results showed that 14 percent of the cases died within three months of admission. Variation in the rate of death between hospitals was 0 to 50 percent.
