Kidney cancer cases have risen dramatically in UK

LONDON (Reuters) – Cases of kidney cancer in Britain have risen 68% in the past 20 years because of lifestyle factors such as smoking and diet, researchers said on Wednesday.

The new figures released by Cancer Research UK, Britain's leading charity, show that more than 5700 people are diagnosed with the disease each year in Britain, which has one of the lowest survival rates in Europe.

"We believe that smoking accounts for 30% to 40% of cases. Other risk factors, such as obesity and high blood pressure, may explain the continuing rise in the disease," Dr. Nick James, a kidney cancer expert at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, said in a statement.

Kidney cancer kills an estimated 95,000 people each year worldwide and 3000 in Britain.

"This upward trend in kidney cancer is a genuine concern but it seems that this is a disease we can do something about," Dr. Gordon McVie, a joint director of Cancer Research UK, said. Reducing obesity could help to curb the alarming rise in kidney cancer, he added.
