P311, a protein first identified in developing mouse brains, appears to cause transformation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, while at the same time inhibiting fibrosis, according to a recent report.
Last year, Dr. Lucia Schuger, from Wayne State University in Detroit, and colleagues screened a cDNA library to identify genes that may play a role in smooth muscle myogenesis. The search yielded the gene for P311, but the function of the encoded protein was unclear.
