Synchronous balneophototherapy and bathing in Dead Sea salt solution are especially useful for patients with chronic-type atopic dermatitis.
This was the conclusion of Dr. R Schiffner, of the Department of Dermatology, University of Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany. Dr. Schiffner and colleagues from the same institution tested the safety and efficacy of the new treatment for outpatients.
The treatment was synchronous balneophototherapy using narrowband ultraviolet B light and bathing in Dead Sea salt solution. Patients had to undergo 3-5 treatment sessions per week up to 35 in total.
There were 615 patients who were analyzed by intention-to-treat and 143 patients who were treated according to the protocol. In total, 289 (47 percent) of patients underwent less than 35 sessions. In decreasing order of frequency, the main reasons were: lack of time (16 percent); non-compliance (12 percent); good improvement (7 percent); lack of efficacy (6 percent), intercurrent disease (4 percent); and side effects (3 percent).
