Patients with chronic renal failure have an abnormal balance of intestinal bacterial flora and increased putrefactants derived from intestinal bacteria.
This greater concentration of toxins with renal sclerosing effects, such as indican, might add to further deterioration of renal function, report researchers in Kanagawa, Japan.
The researchers pointed out that fermentation products and putrefactants of intestinal bacterial origin such as phenols and indoles accumulated in the body as uraemic toxins. This posed problems in patients with chronic renal failure and those on haemodialysis.
