CHICAGO (Reuters) – US health care company Baxter International Inc. said on Wednesday it agreed to compensate the families of 10 Spanish patients who died after undergoing renal dialysis using Baxter products.
The announcement came 3 weeks after the company said it had identified the probable link between its Althane dialyzers and certain patient deaths.
Each of the 10 families will received 55 million pesetas, or about $289,000, Baxter spokeswoman Sally Benjamin Young said.
"Our hope is that this settlement helps to minimize the distress to the families involved," Baxter Chairman and Chief Executive Harry Jansen Kraemer said in a statement.
Earlier this month, Baxter determined that a processing fluid used as a manufacturing aid appeared to play a role in the deaths of 51 people worldwide, 11 of whom were in Spain.
Baxter, based in Deerfield, Illinois, has permanently ceased production of the Althane dialyzers, recalled the product and closed production plants in Ronneby, Sweden, and Miami Lakes, Florida, where the filters were made.
She said the 10 families with whom the company reached a settlement have asked Spanish authorities to drop a criminal investigation into the matter.
The Spanish health minister last week said the country would seek legal action against Baxter in the United States.
Young declined to comment on whether Baxter was considering settlements with other families of patients who died but said, "we have a strong interest in working with these families."
Health officials in the United States are also investigating deaths linked to Baxter kidney dialysis filters in Germany, Croatia, Italy, Colombia, Taiwan and two US states, Texas and Nebraska.
