LONDON (Reuters Health) – The tension-free vaginal tape method of treating urinary stress incontinence is just as effective in obese women as it is in women of normal weight, according to a report published in the December issue of the British Journal of Urology International.
While obesity is often considered a relative contraindication to surgical treatment, the tension-free vaginal tape method appears to be a safe, effective treatment for obese women with stress incontinence.
Dr. K. Mukherjee and Dr. G. Constantine, from Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, UK, assessed the outcomes of 242 women with stress incontinence who underwent the tension-free vaginal tape procedure. The women were divided into three groups based on body mass index: <25, 25 to 29, or 30 or greater (obese).
The quality of life and bladder-specific scores improved significantly in all groups, the authors note. Based on quality of life results, 89% of obese women were cured by the procedure, and the remaining 11% noted an improvement in symptoms. Furthermore, the cure rates did not differ significantly between the three BMI groups. The procedure was associated with low morbidity in all groups.
Tension-free vaginal taping is "a simple procedure even in obese women and is no less effective in this group," the investigators note. "We strongly recommend this operation for all obese women with genuine stress incontinence."
