WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Novartis' Femara (letrozole), one of a new class of aromatase inhibitors used to treat breast cancer, worked better than standard therapy with tamoxifen in treating breast cancer in women with advanced disease, researchers said on Monday.
They said it was too soon to say Femara should replace tamoxifen as a favored drug, but that the new therapy shrank tumors better in the study and helped more women survive.
"Letrozole is associated with a higher rate of tumor shrinkage…and better 1- and 2-year survival than tamoxifen," Duke University's Dr. Matthew Ellis, who presented one of several studies on Femara to a conference, said in a telephone interview.
