NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 08 – Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients often demonstrate impaired lung function, according to a report by German investigators.
While the degree of pulmonary impairment correlates with IBD activity, lung dysfunction can persist during periods of disease remission, Dr. Klaus R. Herrlinger and colleagues report in the February issue of The American Journal of Gastroenterology.
The researchers, from the Robert-Bosch-Hospital in Stuttgart and the Medical University of Luebeck, assessed the pulmonary function of 35 patients with Crohn's disease, 31 with ulcerative colitis, and 30 healthy control subjects. Pulmonary function was less than 80% predicted in 14 (39%) of the Crohn's disease, 14 (45%) of the ulcerative colitis patients and 1 control subject.
