US Cardiology Group Releases New Training Guidelines

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 07 – The American College of Cardiology (ACC) released revised fellowship training guidelines on Thursday that include emphasis on two new subspecialty areas.
The guidelines, which were drafted by nearly 50 experts working on 12 task forces, update recommendations set by the ACC in 1995. The most obvious difference between the two sets of guidelines is the emphasis on training in peripheral vascular medicine and in cardiac MRI.

As with the 1995 guidelines, the revised guidelines recommend that 24 months of training be devoted to core clinical skills with at least 9 months in nonlaboratory clinical practice activities. Furthermore, the importance of active participation in research activities is again emphasized.

"Since the 1995 recommendations, the field of cardiovascular medicine has expanded enormously," Dr. George A. Beller, co-chair of the steering committee and immediate past president of the ACC, told Reuters Health. "New data on what constitutes appropriate procedural volumes and new technologic advances lead us to revise our guidelines," he explained.
