WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Reuters) Feb 28 – New Zealand’s top heart hospital fielded hundreds of calls from aggrieved parents on Thursday after offering to return more than 1000 hearts that were removed from dead babies over the past 50 years without permission.
Auckland’s Greenlane Hospital sparked outrage and calls for a government inquiry after it revealed that in most cases it did not have parental consent for taking around 1350 hearts from fetuses, infants and children since 1950. Hospital managers have apologized for accepting the hearts from other hospitals around New Zealand, but said it was a practice that led to research that improved the survival of children with congenital heart defects. …
