A quantitative HIV assay based on reverse transcriptase (RT) activity may be a reliable alternative to RNA-based assays.
Dr. J. Braun of Centre Hospitalier Charles Nicolle, Rouen, France, and colleagues from Hopital Bichat-Claude Bernard, Paris, Uppsala University, and Cavidi Tech AB, Uppsala, Sweden, set out to evaluate a technically simpler quantitative assay for plasma RT activity. They compared the assay with an RNA-based test on plasma samples from 339 patients infected by HIV-1 group M, HIV-1 group-O or HIV-2 types.
“plasma RT activity assay is a simple, cheap and reliable alternative for HIV viral load determination [that] could be particularly valuable for diagnosis and treatment monitoring in developing countries”.
