Researchers have identified a sub-group of bipolar I disorder patients who have no family history of psychiatric disorders, and who develop the disease later in life.
“Within bipolar I disorder, factors such as EEG abnormalities and differences in clinical and personality features support the validity of a sub-group with no family psychiatric history,” say Stephen Moorhead and Allan Young, from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK.
“Family psychiatric history is consequently an important factor in examining sub-groups of bipolar I disorder.” To investigate whether there is also a relationship with age of first admission, the researchers recorded age of first admission and family history of psychiatric disorders from the case notes of 277 outpatients with bipolar I disorder.
