Highly-active Antiretroviral Therapy May Reduce HIV-Associated Nephropathy

Researchers have found evidence of a strong association between use of highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and declining incidence of HIV-associated nephropathy. Gregory Lucas, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, presented the findings here on February 10th at the 10th Annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.

that there have been concerns that HIVAN would increase as African Americans are more disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic, Dr. Lucas said. Nephropathy is characterized by nephrotic range proteinuria and rapid progression to end-stage renal disease, and is predominantly seen in patients of African or Haitian descent.

However, there are few data on the effects of antiretroviral therapy on the incidence of HIVAN, he said. “To my knowledge, this hasn’t been looked at in a cohort study and we were in an ideal position to do it due to our large African American patient population,” he said in an interview.
