The US abortion rate has dropped to its lowest level since 1974, the year after the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, a new survey showed on Wednesday, but abortion opponents said so-called “partial birth” procedures have tripled since 1996.
As rhetoric revved up on both sides of the abortion debate in advance of next week’s 30th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that recognized a right to terminate pregnancy, the Alan Guttmacher Institute reported 1.31 million US women had abortions in 2000, down from a high of 1.61 million in 1990.
