As the rollout of the smallpox vaccine for 500,000 healthcare workers approaches, a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory committee has updated recommendations on who should receive the vaccine.
On Tuesday, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) noted that in very rare cases, vaccinated individuals have been known to spread vaccinia to infants under 1 year old. While the group still recommends that healthcare workers with an infant in their household be vaccinated, the ACIP said that some states may want to defer vaccination of such individuals. Smallpox vaccines are not routinely given to young infants, due to the potential risk of vaccinia-related side effects.
