Indian Doctors Tend to Rely on X-rays for Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis


Nearly 50% of primary care medical practitioners depend only on chest roentgenograms and do not carry out the recommended sputum microscopy for establishing a diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis, researchers from India report.


Dr. R. Prasad and colleagues from the King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, in north India, studied the diagnostic methods followed in 270 patients referred to them with pulmonary tuberculosis. The patients were administered a questionnaire regarding previous medical consultations and underwent a detailed clinical, laboratory and x-ray examination to confirm the diagnosis.
