Iron supplementation in Sri Lankan children reduces the number and duration of upper respiratory tract infections, a multinational team of researchers reports.
“Iron deficiency anemia is a major public health problem in developing countries including Sri Lanka,” Dr. Sunethra Atukorala from the University of Colombo and colleagues write in the January issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Conflicting reports on the role of iron supplements in infection-related morbidity prompted them to undertake this study, she adds.
