Rapid testing for respiratory viruses should spare antibiotic use and thereby reduce the rate of resistant organisms, according to results of a retrospective medical record review published in the December issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
“Acute viral respiratory disease is the most common reason for pediatric hospitalization in the United States,” write Carrie L. Byington, MD, and colleagues from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. “Viral illnesses may be mistaken for bacterial infection, and antibiotic therapy may be prescribed. Overprescribing of antimicrobials for viral illness is a factor contributing to increasing antimicrobial resistance among bacterial pathogens encountered in pediatrics.”
