When newborns are diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, testing for chromosome 6 abnormalities may help differentiate transient from permanent forms of the illness. According to a team of physicians in France, differentiating the two can provide important information regarding the evolution of the disease process and treatment needs.
Dr. Michel Polak, of Hpital Robert Debr in Paris, and associates surveyed French pediatric clinics and neonatology departments and identified 50 patients with neonatal diabetes (NDM) for whom clinical data were available. According to their report in the Journal of Pediatrics for October, 29 had the transient form and 21 the permanent form of the disease.
