Researchers working with an animal model have shown that rapamycin (sirolimus) may be preferable to cyclosporine A as an immunosuppressant in kidney transplantation. According to findings to be presented next week at the 35th annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in Philadelphia, rapamycin is associated with better preservation of renal function after ischemia-reperfusion injury.
“Because of the shortage of donor organs, many transplant centers in the US have initiated non-heart beating donor programs,” Dr. Sharon R. Inman from Ohio University, Athens, and colleagues note. “Kidneys from these donors, by definition, are subject to ischemia.”
