Twins of the same sex are at greater risk of cerebral palsy compared to unlike-sex twins, particularly if one twin suffers a foetal or infant death.
This is one conclusion of a study of cerebral palsy in twins done by researchers from the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, and the Institute of Psychiatry, London, England. Dr P O
Pharoah and colleagues suggest it is not possible to subdivide the twins according to zygosity. However, the researchers postulate that monozygosity, and specifically monochorionicity,
may be the critical feature leading to the higher prevalence of cerebral impairment among same-sex twins.
