The use of rituximab, an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, to accomplish selective B-cell blockade appears to treat certain refractory cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to the results of a preliminary study conducted in Italy.
Clinical success with the new approach to RA was first reported last year, Dr. Gianfranco Ferraccioli and colleagues, of the University of Udine, note in the August issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism. However, the contribution of B-cell ablation could not be assessed because the anti-CD20 treatment was given along with cyclophosphamide and intermittent high-dose steroids
