Exposure to Several Animals in Infancy May Reduce Allergy Risk Later in Life

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 27 –

Infants who are exposed to two or more cats or dogs during the first year of life appear to be protected against several common allergies later in childhood, according to a report published in the August 28th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Previous studies have yielded conflicting results regarding whether early animal exposure increases or decreases the risk of allergies later in life (see Reuters Health stories July 10, 2001 and May 1, 2001).
