Low-dose Inhaled Corticosteroids Reduce Asthma Relapse Rates

Inhaled corticosteroid therapy administered after an initial asthma-related emergency department visit significantly reduces asthma relapse rates, according to a new study. Additionally, the study finds that therapy with low doses of corticosteroids seems to be as effective at reducing relapse as therapy with high doses in this setting but further research is needed to determine the optimal dosing regimen.

 Investigators from the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Alberta and the Institute of Health Economics in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, studied 1,293 patients who visited the emergency department because of asthma from 1997 to 1999. Emergency department visits and medication data were analyzed for all patients. Patients ranged in age from five to 60 years.
