NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 13 – Consumption of a low-carbohydrate, high-protein (LCHP) diet delivers an exaggerated acid load to the kidney, increasing the risk for kidney stone formation and possibly for bone loss, according to results of a study published in the August issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
Dr. Shalini T. Reddy, of the University of Chicago, Illinois, and colleagues examined the association between LCHP diets and acid-base balance, kidney stone risk, and calcium and bone metabolism in 10 healthy patients enrolled in a metabolic study. Consumption of their usual non-weight-reducing diet was followed for 2 weeks by a severely carbohydrate-restricted induction diet and then 4 weeks of a moderately carbohydrate-restricted maintenance diet.
