Pooled results of trials involving more than 1200 emergency department asthma patients suggest that, after discharge, high doses of inhaled steroids do not provide any advantage over standard treatment with oral steroids, and may not give equivalent results.
Dr. Brian H. Rowe, of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, and colleagues note that a number of studies have examined the replacement of oral corticosteroids with inhaled corticosteroids in such circumstances with “varied results and conclusions.”
