COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — July 18, 2002 —
Lamivudine quickly and safely diminishes the negative effects of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in patients who have undergone renal transplantation.
The results of the study were presented here on July 17th at the 39th annual Congress of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA). The investigators, led by Dr. Martins La Salete from the department of nephrology, Hospital Santo Antonio, Porto, Portugal, treated seven renal transplantation recipients with lamivudine.
All had hepatitis B virus, negative DNA-HBV tests or results below 24 pg/mL and normal hepatic enzymes prior to the transplant surgery. Four of the seven patients had hepatic histological examination, which determined that two patients had minimal inflammation, and two had moderate inflammation. The patients with moderate inflammation were treated with interferon.
