There is a strong association between positivity for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and increased risk of hepatocellular cancer.
Taiwanese researchers report a prevalence of HBeAg of 39 percent among men positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) who subsequently were diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients considered to be at high risk because of HBeAg positivity should be candidates for antiviral drug therapy.
The patients should also be monitored closely for early detection of liver cancer, say investigators from the Taiwan Community-Based Cancer Screening Project. Chronic HBV infection is a serious clinical problem worldwide because of the potential for adverse sequelae, including hepatic cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
HBV infection is particularly prevalent in the Asian-Pacific region and patients usually acquire the infection at the time of birth or in early childhood.
