Individuals with variants of the surfactant protein B gene appear to be at increased risk for lung cancer, particular squamous cell carcinoma, according to a report published in the July 9th issue of the British Journal of Cancer.
Pulmonary surfactant is known to play an important role in mediating the local airway response to inhaled carcinogens. Based on this, Dr. Carola Seifart and colleagues from Philipps-University of Marburg in Germany hypothesized that variations in surfactant genes may influence lung cancer susceptibility.
The researchers analyzed DNA from 117 lung cancer patients, 117 matched control subjects, and 123 population control subjects for polymorphisms within intron 4 of the surfactant protein B gene. Previous reports had shown that protein B is critical for the spread of surfactant within the airways.
