Airway Remodeling in Asthma Starts in Childhood and Continues Through Adulthood

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 03 –

The presence of asthma, low lung function in early childhood, and airway hyperresponsiveness and male sex are factors associated with airway remodeling in young adults, according to a report in the June 1st issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

“The impact of childhood asthma, airway responsiveness, atopy, and smoking on airway remodeling was investigated in a birth cohort studied longitudinally to age 26,” Dr. Malcolm R. Sears, of McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and colleagues explain. They used a low postbronchodilator ratio of FEV1 to vital capacity (VC) at age 18 or age 26 as a marker of airway remodeling.
