A combination of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) and paclitaxel used to treat patients with advanced solid tumours has acceptable toxicity.
Researchers from the University General Hospital of Heraklion, Greece, designed a phase I study to determine maximum tolerated doses and dose-limiting toxicity of the combined chemotherapy. Twenty-six patients were enrolled in the study.
The researchers observed one complete and four partial responses in the 18 patients with histologically confirmed advanced solid tumours they could evaluate. Responses occurred mainly in breast cancer patients.
The investigators explain that both PLD and paclitaxel are among the most active agents in various tumour types. PLD has a more favourable pharmacokinetic and toxicity profile in comparison to the free drug.
