Underweight patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) could benefit from
dietary intervention as a prerequisite for physical training, say Swedish researchers. Researchers from Sahlgrenska University Hospital Goteborg University, Sweden, studied 87 patients with COPD.
They found “slight, but uniform, indications of positive effects of dietary intervention during multidisciplinary rehabilitation.” Twenty-four of the subjects, none of whom were on oxygen therapy, served as controls in the evaluation of a one year individual multifaceted dietary intervention. Dietary advice, based on dietary history and socio-economic status, was given at baseline and a second dietary history interview was undertaken at the end of the study.
