High Cardiac Mortality Threatened In Renovascular Hypertension

Increased cardiac sympathetic drive in patients with renovascular hypertension may have adverse long-term effects on their prognosis.

The increased sympathetic drive stems from altered cardiac sympathetic function, which also impairs catecholamine extraction.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Bethesda, Maryland, United States, in Göteborg, Sweden and in Prahran, Australia, noted that while it was known that overall sympathetic nerve activity increased in patients with renovascular hypertension, it was not known whether that also involved the heart.

To investigate if cardiac sympathetic activity was increased in patients with hypertension and renal artery stenosis, the researchers studied 14 patients with hypertension before angioplasty of angiographically identified renal artery stenosis. Nine of these patients had renovascular hypertension proven at one-year follow-up, 19 healthy volunteers served as controls.
