Vasectomy does not increase the risk of prostate cancer – even 25 years later.
Researchers from the University of Otago in Dunedin and Wellington, New Zealand, found no elevation in risk 25 years or more after vasectomy in a large, national, population-based and case-controlled study of 923 new cases of prostate cancer.
“That no association between prostate cancer and vasectomy was found, even 25 years or more after vasectomy, strongly suggests that there is no increased risk of prostate cancer after this procedure,” they concluded. The investigators undertook the study because NZ has the highest prevalence of vasectomy in the world as well as regulations requiring statutory notification of cancer.
