Chemotherapy Added Successfully To Conventional Prostate Therapy

 Excellent results can be achieved by adding chemotherapy to hormonal and radiation therapy for patients with clinical stage III positive seminal vesicles or positive-node prostate cancer.

Researchers from Seattle, Washington, United States, say 25 patients in a small-series trial accepted the addition of chemotherapy when openly informed of their prognoses with conventional therapy.

“Results in the current small series appear excellent and may be superior to radiation plus hormones alone,” explain investigators from Puget Sound Cancer Centres, the Seattle Prostate Institute, Grado Ragde Clinics and Northwest Hospital. They suggest larger randomised studies of the combined therapy are warranted.

 The researchers point out that patients with T3 and/or N1 prostate carcinoma have poor cure rates. They sought to improve the rates for relapse-free, cancer-specific survival by adding chemo-hormonal therapy to radiation.

 Participants received six courses of vinblastine, doxorubicin and mitomycin with

simultaneous radiation and permanent androgen deprivation  .
