Finasteride, the type II 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor used to treat androgenetic alopecia, appears to improve growth and thickness of hairs to a greater extent than hair count, according to a study funded by the drug’s manufacturer.
Most studies investigating the drug have used hair count as the primary efficacy end point. Finasteride’s effect on hair weight, which could be influenced by not only hair count but also by hair thickness and length, has not been well studied, the researchers point out.
